Madrid have been heavily linked with the 23-year-old as they look to snap up players before their transfer ban takes effect.

United are also fans of the the Swiss international and have received a boost by the latest update.

Wolfsburg have ruled out doing any business with Real for the foreseeable future.

When asked by reporters if the defender would be moving to the Bernabeu, Wolfsburg managing director Klaus Allofs said: “You can forget it, we would certainly not do that."

It is unknown if the German outfit would be more willing to hold talks with United but the Premier League giants can be buoyed by the news that Rodriguez will not be joining Real.

Meanwhile, The Express reported yesterday that Schalke are planning a swoop for United full-back Marcos Rojo.

And the Red Devils have put Rodriguez high on their list of possible targets should Rojo - or any other defender for that matter - leave the club this month.

Wolfsburg signed Rodriguez from FC Zurich in 2012 for £7.5m.

He has since established himself as one of the best full-backs in the Bundesliga and reportedly has a release clause of £27m.
