Peterborough United 0 - 0 Southend United: Southend survive after Peterborough miss penalty

Goalkeeper Daniel Bentley was the hero as Southend halted their slump by shutting out the highest scorers in English football in a 0-0 draw at Peterborough.

Phil Brown's men arrived at the ABAX Stadium after crashing to three successive defeats and leaking 11 goals in the process, but they responded with a fine defensive display to remain three points off the play-off places.

It looked as though their efforts would be in vain in the seventh minute of stoppage time but Bentley pulled off a fine save to keep out Chris Forrester's penalty.

Referee Kevin Johnson had pointed to the spot, despite fierce protests from the visitors, after Posh substitute Marcus Maddison had gone down in the box.

Bentley had also impressed when tipping over an early rocket from Erhun Oztumer before keeping out a Lee Angol header and a Conor Washington blast as Posh started the second half well.

Southend also had a chance to nick victory when Jack Payne dragged a low shot inches wide of the far post before Tyrone Barnett steered a shot over.

Barnett had been denied a first-half goal by a smart tip over from Ben Alnwick.
