Liverpool transfer news: Reds to benefit from Shelvey’s Newcastle switch

Liverpool are set to receive around £3.6 million from Jonjo Shelvey’s move to Newcastle United.

The midfielder completed a transfer from Swansea City to the North East of England on Tuesday afternoon, for a fee of £12 million (via the BBC).

Liverpool are due to benefit as a consequence of the sell-on clause that they inserted into his contract when he joined Swansea in 2013, according to the Daily Mail.

Shelvey joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in 2010, but made just 47 Premier League appearances for the club before he was allowed to depart.

The 23-year-old will be seeking to prove his doubters wrong in his new challenge at Newcastle, after receiving some criticism for his performances from some fans this season.

An efficient distributor of the ball, Shelvey has registered an average pass accuracy of 83% in the Premier League this season, and has completed more passes (652) than all but one Swansea midfielder.

He has scored just once and provided only two assists in the top flight this campaign, however, and will be seeking to improve upon those figures in the second half of 2015/16.

Newcastle manager Steve McClaren is seemingly determined to bolster his side’s options during this month’s transfer window as the Magpies seek to stave off the threat of relegation, with the club completing a deal for Bordeaux’s Henri Saivet on Monday.

Newcastle played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Manchester United on Tuesday, though Shelvey was not registered in time to play.

McClaren’s side actually edged possession (53%) and put on a promising display, though remain in the relegation zone.
