Liverpool really should do all they can to sign this £37m star

When Jurgen Klopp first signed on the dotted line as the official replacement for Brendan Rodgers earlier this season, it was inevitable that several of his ex-players from the Bundesliga would see their names linked with an illustrious reunion with their former boss in the Premier League.

The likes of Mats Hummels, Ilkay Gundogan, Neven Subotic and Marco Reus have all experienced such an outcome with varying degrees of probability thus far, but as neither of them seem any closer to joining Liverpool than they were before Klopp's appointment, perhaps Borussia Dortmund will prove a little more stubborn than first expected.

However, as the Reds are reportedly willing to match Bayern Munich's sizeable £37million asking price for their 2014 German World Cup hero, Mario Gotze, this January, could Liverpool really be on the verge of completing such a deal before the closure of the winter transfer period?

If the club's previous spending habits in the transfer market are to prove anything to go by, then Liverpool seemingly shouldn't be put off by the fee currently lingering above Mario Gotze's head.

The likes of Christian Benteke and Roberto Firmino famously set the Reds back close to £60million in the summer after all, and as Brendan Rodgers wasn't exactly careful with the Reds' resources in the transfer windows prior to this current season, now would be a strange time for the Anfield hierarchy to put a stop to their significant seasonal spending.

Mario Gotze could very well represent the ideal candidate worthy of turning Liverpool from forgettable mid-table strugglers, in to title challengers in the not too distant future. He would open the door for several other German players to have worked under Klopp in the past, which could only signal promising news on Merseyside.

Via his calm composure on the ball inside the final third, effective quick-feet and impressive range of technical skill when running at opposing defenders, as well as goal scoring abilities, Gotze has quite rightly defined himself as one of the most exciting young stars of the modern era.

He may currently be injured, and the 23-year-old former Dortmund man has admittedly failed to truly establish himself at Bayern Munich as everybody initially expected him to, yet because Gotze remains in the emerging stages of his career with a fair amount of priceless experience already under his belt, very few question marks remain as to whether or not he can really push on in the future.

At a club such as Liverpool, where the first team opportunities would arrive far more frequently than they currently do at Bayern, a player of his quality would thrive. The Anfield faithful have been crying out for a world class talent to step in and take the club by storm ever since Luis Suarez first departed for the Nou Camp in the summer of 2014.

Bayern Munich have in fact distanced themselves from the story of late, but that doesn't necessarily mean a great deal these days. Yes, Gotze ultimately represents one of the brightest young talents in German football, but if the Bundesliga giants can't offer the talented midfielder enough guaranteed first team football looking into the future, Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool could prove very tempting indeed.

Even if this deal fails to take place this month, Liverpool fans may still have a very exciting summer in store with thoughts of Mario Gotze stepping out at Anfield firmly in mind.
