A captain's goal from Massimo Maccarone beat Torino 1-0 and boosted Empoli up to seventh in the Serie A table

Empoli, inspired throughout by the evergreen Maccarone, were dominant in Turin and the former Middlesbrough striker almost opened the scoring with a right-footed drive in the 23rd minute.

With Torino retreating in the second half, he did fire the visitors ahead following a scramble for possession between Alessandro Gazzi and Manuel Pucciarelli, the Empoli man winning the duel and allowing Maccarone his cool finish.

Free-falling Torino might have equalised at the death but Granata skipper Kamil Glik nodded just wide.
