Colchester United 0 - 2 Southend United: White and Mooney return to haunt Colchester

Posted Sunday, December 27, 2015 by PA

John White and David Mooney both scored against their former club to help Southend to a 2-0 Essex derby victory against struggling Colchester.

Darren Ambrose fired just wide for the U's early on while Southend goalkeeper Dan Bentley saved at the feet of Chris Porter in a tight first half.

Bentley parried away George Moncur's low, long-range drive while at the other end Mooney's deflected effort was tipped over by home goalkeeper Elliot Parish.

Moncur planted a weak shot straight at Bentley while Mooney had two decent chances for Southend as the sides went in level at the break.

The deadlock was broken four minutes after half-time when Adam Barrett kept possession on the edge of the area from a throw and former Colchester defender White sent a low first-time volley through a crowd of players and in.

Mooney sealed Southend's win with 18 minutes remaining when he went past Parish and finished coolly after Noel Hunt had robbed George Elokobi of possession and released the former Colchester striker.
