Johnny Giles says Arsenal need to sign a striker in the January transfer window.
The Gunners have been on reliant on France striker Olivier Giroud this season following injuries to Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott.
The 28-year-old scored a hat-trick in Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Olympiacos in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
In fact, the former Montpellier man has scored 15 times in 28 games for club and country this season, winning back his place in Arsene Wenger’s side.
However, former Manchester United and Leeds United midfielder Giles believes Wenger needs to sign cover for Giroud in the event of an injury.
''They proved they could cope last night,” Giles told Newstalk.
''The problem is the striking situation. Wenger has come under criticism for having one recognised striker.
''You won’t go the season without getting injuries. Ferguson had four strikers in the United squads.
''If Giroud is injured, who will come in for them?”
He added: “Signing a striker would be an ideal situation for them.”
Giroud has become the seventh Premier League player to score a hat-trick in the Champions League after his stunning treble against Wednesday night’s Greek opponents.
The France international moved to Premier League side Arsenal from Ligue 1 side Montpellier in 2012.
Arsenal travel to Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.
