Swansea consider approaching Ryan Giggs as potential replacement for Garry Monk

Swansea are reportedly considering approaching Manchester United assistant coach Ryan Giggs about their vacant managerial post.

Garry Monk's 22-month tenure as Swans boss came to an end yesterday after he was relieved of his duties following a run of just one win from 11 games.

Former Swans manager Brendan Rodgers and David Moyes were the initial front-runners to succeed Monk, but The Independent believe the Welsh club regard Giggs as a viable candidate too.

Giggs has worked closely with Louis van Gaal since the Dutchman took the Old Trafford reins in summer 2014 after initially acting as caretaker manager when Moyes was sacked at the back end of the 2013/14 season.

While many see Giggs as an ideal candidate to graduate into Van Gaal's successor when his United contract expires in 2017, The Manchester Evening News claim the former Wales international is open to the idea of leaving the club.

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins has a track record of appointing young managers after overseeing the arrivals of Roberto Martinez and Brendan Rodgers, so a move for Giggs – the Premier League's record appearance maker – would be in keeping with his philosophy.
