Adam McGurk's first-half goal secured Portsmouth safe passage into the third round of the FA Cup as Accrington were beaten 1-0 at Fratton Park.

McGurk guided home Marc McNulty's cross midway through the opening period to hand the 2008 winners the chance of a big-money tie in round three at the expense of their League Two promotion rivals.

The home side took the lead in the 21st minute. McNulty broke down the right and when his cross squeezed through a cluster of bodies at the near post, McGurk was on hand to score from 12 yards.

Pompey controlled the entirety of the first period, during which Accrington failed to muster a shot on target, and came within inches of doubling their advantage in the 33rd minute.

Ben Davies swung in a free-kick from the right and McNulty crept in front of his marker to head against the Stanley crossbar.

Portsmouth continued to dominate after half-time and only an outstretched leg from Jason Mooney prevented McGurk from sliding home a second. Accrington failed to snatch a dramatic draw in stoppage time when Terry Gornell headed straight at Brian Murphy.
