Chris Whelpdale's hat-trick helped Stevenage record back-to-back wins for the first time this season after a thrilling 4-3 victory over Morecambe.

Teddy Sheringham's Boro, who won 2-1 at Bristol Rovers on Tuesday, opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Dean Wells' thumping effort from a corner beat Morecambe keeper Barry Roche before Kevin Ellison equalised six minutes later.

Ben Kennedy missed a 19th-minute penalty for the hosts, but a minute later Whelpdale got his first of three goals, cutting in from the right and rolling the ball into the bottom left corner of the net.

Alan Goodall conceded a penalty for the second time on the cusp of half-time, but Whelpdale's tame penalty was saved by Roche.

In similar fashion to his first goal, Whelpdale extended Boro's lead in the 49th minute, and then grabbed his hat-trick with a simple tap-in at the far post on 61 minutes.

Morecambe improved late on with Paul Mullin converting a penalty on 82 minutes before Ellison added a third in the dying minutes with a volley.
