Southend will be not be able to play winger David Worrall against Wigan at Roots Hall.

Worrall suffered a blow to the head when scoring in the 5-2 win at Oldham Athletic on Tuesday night, and therefore has been ruled out under medical guidelines.

Midfielder Michael Timlin (foot) is expected to be back in contention, as is forward Joe Pigott, who came off the bench against Oldham.

Midfielder Gary Deegan has resumed training to step up his rehabilitation after an ankle injury, along with Stephen McLaughlin (toe) and forward Noel Hunt (foot).

Wigan are hoping to bounce back from a 1-0 loss to Burton in midweek when they go to Southend on Saturday.

Manager Gary Caldwell says the defeat in League One has not changed the team he had in mind for the weekend but he may make a few changes.

Caldwell said: "There are certain positions that I'm thinking about changing, but the defeat doesn't change all of the good work that we've done so far."

Michael Jacobs is expected to be unavailable (knee) for Wigan who currently sit fourth in the League.
