Arsenal's worst fears have been confirmed with the news that Francis Coquelin will be out for 12 weeks with a medial knee ligament injury.
The 24-year-old midfielder was forced off with the injury early on in the Gunners' 2-1 defeat at West Brom on Saturday and missed the 3-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Wenger initially estimated that the Coquelin would be sidelined for at least two months, but subsequent scans have revealed the extent of the damage, with the Arsenal boss conceding his compatriot will absent for a slightly longer period.
"It is what we feared basically," the Frenchman said after midweek victory at the Emirates Stadium.
"It means it will be, let's be realistic - a medial knee ligament - 12 weeks."
Coquelin has started in all but one of the north London club's 13 games in the Premier League this season, helping them to fourth in the standings, where they trail leaders Leicester by just two points.
