Mourinho has insisted publicly that he will not go to the Chelsea board ahead of the January transfer window to ask for reinforcements for a squad that is struggling badly in the Premier League - but that does not mean he will not sign anyone.
Mourinho's team go into Saturday's clash with Norwich at Stamford Bridge languishing in 16th place after an unprecedented seven defeats in 12 matches.
Although the Portuguese insists a top four place is still within reach, he is under intense and increasing pressure, but said: "I'm not saying I won't sign anyone. I'm saying I won't ask the club to do that. I don't have the right to do that.
"I don't have the right because our performances during the season in the League have not been good enough. If I ask for players, or if the club gives me a handful of players, it's a bit like taking the responsibility away from us and saying we need extra to reach our objectives.
"I want the responsibility in my hands, the players to have the responsibility in their hands. I want the players to feel I trust them and don't need other players to reach the objectives. So I think we should carry on together - me and the players."
Mourinho is under pressure at Chelsea, but insists his current squad must take responsibility
Radamel Falcao is one of those expected to leave if Mourinho does seek to strengthen
But with Cristiano Ronaldo's future at Real Madrid far from clear after a fallout with president Florentino Perez and with both Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City linked with the Portugal superstar - if Roman Abramovich was to suddenly swoop, Mourinho would not spurn it.
"If the club presented me with a superstar," of course I would accept it," said Mourinho. "But not because I'm not happy or don't trust my players, or that I think only a superstar will help us reach our objectives.
"We believe in ourselves, we trust ourselves. I'd be more than happy to go with this squad to the end of the season."
Mourinho also insisted that he expects flop striker Radamel Falcao, who has scored just once this season since joining on loan from Monaco, to stay.
The Colombian has been linked with a move to Valencia in January but Mourinho said: "I think so he will stay. I hope so. I hope everybody stays and I hope nobody comes in, and we go together to the end."
