United have been strongly linked with Tottenham’s Harry Kane and were interested in Danny Ings, before he moved from Burnley to Liverpool.

But they are now eyeing the in-form Vardy, 28.

Old Trafford scouts have watched the England striker in his last two matches against West Brom and Watford.

Vardy scored in both games to maintain his sensational run of getting on the scoresheet in his last nine Premier League matches.

No player has ever done that in one season.

Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy scored in ten successive Premier League games but that was done over two seasons.

Vardy was a bargain £1m signing from Fleetwood by former Foxes boss Nigel Pearson.

But the speedy striker – who has scored 12 goals this season – is now worth at least £15m.

Vardy, meanwhile, is battling a leg injury which kept him out of England’s 2-0 defeat in Spain on Friday night.
