Whitehawk 5 - 3 Lincoln City: Whitehawk reach second round of FA Cup for first time with 5-3 win over Lincoln

National League South side Whitehawk progressed to the second round of the FA Cup for the first time in their history with a thrilling 5-3 win over Lincoln.

The semi-professional outfit, who were playing in the Sussex County League five years ago, raced into an early two-goal lead before scoring three further times in the second half.

National League side Lincoln have now been dumped out the competition by non-league opposition in three of the past four seasons and were reduced to 10 men in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time.

The Sussex club took a sixth-minute lead when midfielder Sam Deering slung in a cross from the right for towering striker Danny Mills, who rose unchallenged at the back post to head home his 15th goal of the campaign.

The cross-bar came to the visitors' rescue nine minutes later after winger David Martin rounded goalkeeper Paul Farman and left Mills with an empty goal to aim for.

Lincoln continued to live dangerously and were punished for more slack defending in the 27th minute when former Brighton winger Jake Robinson dribbled into the box after a speedy counter-attack and drove low into the bottom corner.

Imposing City striker Matt Rhead reduced the deficit in first-half stoppage time with a coolly taken penalty after being dragged over in the box by Mills.

But the hosts restored their two-goal advantage when nippy midfielder Deering snuck into the box and hit a left-footed shot low into the bottom corner.

Rhead, who only turned professional at 26, grabbed another lifeline for Chris Moyses' side six minutes later but Martin scored again with a close-range shot for Whitehawk in the 86th minute.

City rallied in added time and Rhead nodded in a third to complete his hat-trick.

But there was still time for Deering to seal victory from the penalty spot after being brought down by Alan Power, who was dismissed for the last-man challenge.
