Walsall 3 - 2 Gillingham: Demetriou at the death as Walsall comeback stuns Gillingham

Jason Demetriou scored in the 90th minute to send Walsall to the top of League One with a dramatic 3-2 win over former leaders Gillingham at the Banks's Stadium.

Rico Henry delivered a great cross to the far post where Cyprus international Demetriou met the ball on the half-volley to beat goalkeeper Stuart Nelson, completing the comeback after the Saddlers had fought back from two goals behind.

Gillingham made a determined start and built a two-goal lead by the 31st minute, Cody McDonald putting them in front after 12 minutes with a neat low shot from Doug Loft's great through-ball which split the home defence.

The second goal arrived when Paul Downing was slow in clearing, lost the ball to the lively Bradley Dack and tripped the midfielder who promptly drove in the resulting penalty.

Walsall looked in big trouble but were back in the game in with two goals in two minutes. Kieron Morris fired home a low shot from outside the box in the 37th minute, then George Evans opened up the Gillingham defence with a low cross which Milan Lalkovic tucked away from close range for his fourth goal of the season.

In a lively second half both sides went close but the Saddlers shaded it and late-goal specialists Gillingham succumbed to the last-gasp intervention from Demetriou.
