Burton Albion kept pace with Sky Bet League One leaders Walsall thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Oldham.

Nasser El Khayati grabbed the only goal before a dogged defensive effort saw the Brewers hold on for their 10th win of the season.

Oldham went close to an early breakthrough when Carl Winchester's long-range shot flew just wide of the Burton goal.

But the visitors struck after 17 minutes with their first real attack of the game, Mark Duffy's pass finding El Khayati to fire in a low shot from 14 yards.

Superb goalkeeping denied Oldham a first-half equaliser as Burton's Jon McLaughlin saved from Danny Philliskirk and then tipped Jay Fulton's looping header on to the crossbar.

Burton almost doubled their lead when Tom Flanagan's header was cleared off the line by Fulton before Dominic Poleon wasted a good chance for the hosts.

With Oldham pressing, the defiant McLaughlin kept out both Poleon and Joseph Mills. Mark Yeates could also have levelled for the Latics but he drilled wide at the end of a mazy run.
