Celta Vigo vs Real Madrid - Sergi Gomez backs Celta to spring another surprise against Real Madrid

Celta Vigo defender Sergi Gomez is convinced his side can claim another major scalp when Real Madrid visit the Estadio Balaidos on Saturday.

The Galician side won 2-1 at Europa League champions Sevilla before brushing aside Barcelona 4-1 at home last month in La Liga.

Celta and Real are the only two teams unbeaten in Spain's top flight. They are level on 18 points with Barcelona, with Real leading the standings on goal difference.

"The three teams are right up there and obviously right now this is a direct duel," Gomez told his club's official website.

"It's a unique time and we have the opportunity to continue in a high position in the league. We know we can win on Saturday.

"We want to take advantage of our good run of form and try to make it last as long as possible."

Celta have won five of their opening eight games and found the back of the net 17 times, one goal less than Real.

"We are really happy with the work we are doing," Gomez said.

"It's a big motivation to see our team in the top positions of the table."

Gomez, whose side are coming off a 2-1 win at Villarreal, hopes Real will not be at their best following Los Blancos' exertions in Europe on Wednesday.

Real were held to a goalless draw at Paris St Germain, a result that kept them level on seven points with PSG at the top of Group A.

"It could benefit us but then again, Real are used to playing many consecutive games at this level," Gomez said.

"We know they are a strong team, with great players, but if we play the way we know, there is no reason why we cannot win."

Real beat Celta twice in La Liga last season, including a 4-2 victory at Balaidos back in April.

Madrid have enjoyed an impressive start to the campaign under new coach Rafael Benitez.

They have been solid in defence, conceding just two goals in 11 games in all competitions. They kept a clean sheet in midweek at PSG, much to Benitez's joy.

"I'm a very happy man," Benitez told his club's website after his team's match in Paris.

"It's difficult to say if this was our best match of the season so far because we've played some good games.

"I can't take anything away from the team's performance. Given the circumstances, we played an exceptional game."

Real, 3-0 winners over Levante last weekend, were not at full strength in Paris and are still without the services of injured players Dani Carvajal, Pepe, Alvaro Arbeloa, James Rodriguez and Gareth Bale.

Benitez has got Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic back after he missed Wednesday's match with a minor muscular injury, while France striker Karim Benzema returned to training on Thursday and could feature this weekend after overcoming a hamstring problem.

Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo are Real's leading scorers in the league with six goals apiece.
