Cambridge ended Northampton's six game unbeaten run in Sky Bet League Two with a 2-1 win.
Northampton goalkeeper Adam Smith produced a magnificent point-blank save from Robbie Simpson's header after 13 minutes when the forward met Ryan Donaldson's cross.
Harrison Dunk gave the U's the lead six minutes before half-time when he took a pass from Liam Hughes, ran past a defender and fired a fine low effort beyond Smith from outside the area.
Barry Corr doubled Cambridge's lead five minutes into the second half, tapping home a simple finish from Greg Taylor's cross after Hughes set the defender free with an excellent pass.
After Ryan Creswell hit a post, Northampton were offered a route back into the game on the hour when debutant Alie Sesay felled Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the box, allowing Marc Richards to blast home from the penalty spot.
The Cobblers' Lawson D'Ath was sent off 14 minutes from the end, receiving a straight red card for cynically bringing Dunk down as he looked to lead a Cambridge break.
