Manchester City could now be without silky Spaniard David Silva, who limped off in Spain's 4-0 over Luxemburg.
The La Roja international was substituted just nine minutes in to the fixture, as the current European champions booked their place at next summer's tournament in France with a routine victory.
The City star has been in fantastic form for the league leaders so far this term, recording six assists and a goal in five Premier League outings.
He is definitely ruled out of the upcoming fixture with Ukraine, with the Spanish national side stating ‘a bad sprain of the internal ligament of the right ankle' as the official explanation.
The 29-year old could be facing a race to get fit in time for the Manchester derby on October 25th, and is expected to sit out the clashes with Bournemouth and Sevilla in the interim.
The news comes at a bad time for the Etihad outfit, who will be without star striker Sergio Aguero for around a month after the Argentine ace was also injured on international duty.
