Bayern Munchen have confirmed Mario Gotze will be sidelined for up to 12 weeks after picking up a thigh injury in Germany's 1-0 loss to the Republic of Ireland.
Gotze was taken off in the first half of the shock defeat at the Aviva Stadium clutching his left adductor and Nationalelf head coach Jaochim Low confirmed the influential 23-year-old was sure to miss next week's qualifier with minnows Georgia.
However, following scans on the injury, the problem now seems to be far more serious and the Bayern midfielder is now only expected to return early next year.
"Mario Gotze will be missing for 10 to 12 weeks," read a statement on Bayern's official website.
"The 23-year-old retired from the match on Thursday with an injury to his adductor muscle, which was confirmed by a test on Friday.
"Gotze will be treated at first by the DFB medical team in Leipzig."
