WANTED: Liverpool could swoop for Jurgen Klopp

And German boss Jurgen Klopp is now the favourite to take over at Anfield.

Rodgers, 42, was dismissed by the club's owners, Fenway Sports Group, within three hours of the 1-1 Merseyside derby draw against Everton at Goodison Park.

The result stretched Liverpool's run to just one win in nine games, excluding a penalty shoot-out victory over League Two Carlisle in the Capital One Cup.

Liverpool are now set to hold talks with former Borussia Dortmund boss Klopp as they look to move swiftly to appoint a new manager and want a boss who boasts a winning pedigree with Carlo Ancelotti also in the running.

FSG hope to appoint their fourth manager since buying the club in 2010 before the end of the international break and want him in place before they face Tottenham on October 17.

In a joint FSG statement, Principal Owner John W Henry, Chairman Tom Werner and President Mike Gordon said: "We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Brendan Rodgers for the significant contribution he has made to the club and express our gratitude for his hard work and commitment.

"All of us have experienced some wonderful moments with Brendan as manager and we are confident he will enjoy a long career in the game.

"Although this has been a difficult decision, we believe it provides us with the best opportunity for success on the pitch.

"Ambition and winning are at the heart of what we want to bring to Liverpool and we believe this change gives us the best opportunity to deliver it.

"The search for a new manager is underway and we hope to make an appointment in a decisive and timely manner."

Rodgers was unaware his three-year and four month spell as Liverpool boss was about to end when he spoke to the media after the Everton clash.

He took a phone call from Gordon on his return to the club's training base Melwood during which he was informed of their decision.

Chief executive Ian Ayre then contacted Rodgers and the Northern Irishman invited him to his house where they discussed the matter.

It is believed that Rodgers took the news in a dignified manner and will now discuss his severance package with club officials.

ACE: Raheem Sterling joined Man City this summer

Rodgers and Liverpool almost won the league in the 2013-14 season but fell four points short of champions Manchester City.

The sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona and the loss of key players through injury then saw the Reds slump to sixth last season.

Raheem Sterling and Steven Gerrard left the club this summer but despite a further £80m in spending, taking Rodgers' total to £291m, FSG lost patience with their manager.

Rodgers leaves with the club having lost just two games this season and three points off the top four but FSG believe the change had to be made.

It is believed even a win over Everton would not have saved him and they will now search for their successor.

Klopp has been unemployed since leaving Dortmund in the summer following seven years at the Bundesliga club and has let it be known he would end his sabbatical for a job in the Premier League.
