Massimo Maccarone's late goal gave Empoli their first home win of the season and ended Sassuolo's unbeaten start in Serie A.

Maccarone's 88th-minute header earned a 1-0 victory for Empoli, who ended the game with 10 men.

The Tuscans had the better of the first half but never really troubled Andrea Consigli, although Rade Krunic should have done better than head wide from Manuel Pucciarelli's cross.

At the other end, substitute Nicola Sansone came close to embarrassing Lukasz Skorupski with a curling effort from long range that drifted narrowly wide.

Maccarone broke the deadlock when he flicked in Piotr Zielinski's corner at the near post.

Zielinski was shown a second yellow minutes later but Empoli held on.
