Luke Prosser's own goal handed Sky Bet League One leaders Burton a 1-0 victory at Pirelli Stadium and brought an end to Southend's unbeaten away record.
The big defender could only help a Tom Naylor shot into his own net as Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's side made it five games without defeat.
Burton failed to capitalise on their best moments in a largely uneventful first period.
Nasser El Khayati had a shot deflected wide, Mark Duffy's rising 20-yard drive was tipped over by Blues keeper Daniel Bentley and John Mousinho missed the target with a header.
The visitors struggled to carve out openings, though home keeper Jon McLaughlin had to make a smart save to keep out David Worrall's deflected cross.
After the break, substitute Matty Palmer and Duffy both went close before Burton pressure was rewarded in the 51st minute when midfielder Naylor drilled a low shot into the box and Prosser could only turn the ball into his own net.
Southend had chances to level the scores but McLaughlin was quickly off his line to deny Joe Pigott and David Mooney could only direct a header into the arms of the Burton keeper.
