Mainz moved above Darmstadt and into fifth place in the Bundesliga on Friday night after late drama in a 3-2 win at the Bollenfalltor.
Stefan Bell and Yunus Malli put Mainz on course for their second away win of the season with two early goals, but the hosts hit back immediately through Marcel Heller.
Half-time substitute Marco Sailer got the Lillies back on level terms, but it was Mainz who found a winner through Pablo De Blasis in the 64th minute.
Darmstadt had the chance to equalise again deep in stoppage time when a penalty was awarded for a foul by Gonzalo Jara on Luca Caldirola, but Sandro Wagner lifted his spot-kick over the crossbar with the sound of the final whistle the only noise to be heard in the stadium after the ball missed the target.
