Chelsea fans urge Jose Mourinho to bring back sidelined skipper John Terry

CHELSEA fans have demanded Jose Mourinho restores axed skipper John Terry to the team.

The travelling support sang "we want our captain back" as the 34-year-old did a solo warm-down following their 2-1 Champions League defeat at Porto on Tuesday night.

After playing every minute of the 38 Premier League games last season, it was the fourth time in five matches the club captain has been left out.

Terry has kept silent on his treatment by Mourinho.

But in Portugal the fans - who were kept behind after the surprise defeat - let it be known in no uncertain terms they want their 'Captain, Leader, Legend' back in the heart of defence.

The bizarre way Mourinho has handled Terry, led to former Chelsea centre back Jason Cundy lashing out and insisting Branislav Ivanovic - who was at fault for Porto's first goal in their 2-1 win - should be the one left paying the price for the club's shocking start to the season.

UNDER PRESSURE: Jose Mourinho's Chelsea lost to Porto

"Something is bugging me at Chelsea," he said.

"If you're going to drop John Terry, that's the manager's decision and whether you agree or disagree you have to go with that.

"But to give the armband to Ivanovic, who is having a really tough time at the moment and has arguably been Chelsea's worst player this season, what does that say to the best defender Chelsea had last season in John Terry?

"I think Mourinho is sending out a message. John Terry hasn't played badly this season and I think he's been really unfairly treated. I don't think he's played badly enough for him to be on the bench."

Mourinho has reacted increasingly desperately to try to reverse Chelsea's dismal start to the season, which - including the Community Shield - has seen them lose five and draw two of their 11 matches.

Mourinho also chose to leave strikers Radamel Falcao, Loic Remy and Brazilian playmaker Oscar at home for the loss which dropped Chelsea down to third in Group G.

Even Spain striker Diego Costa said: "It's not a good moment now.

"We must do more. We have a good squad with a great deal of quality. We have maybe lost some confidence in three or four games.

"The manager knows the quality of his team. He knows what we can do. It is the responsibility of all of us. We have to improve our character and confidence.

"To come out of this we need to be all together, and for everyone to give a little more.

"We are not playing well, this is not a good moment, but we have players to get out of this easily."

But who the best players are currently seems like a mystery - even to Mourinho.

The misfiring champions are wallowing down in 16th in the Premier League and have two home matches coming, against Southampton on Saturday and then Aston Villa a fortnight later after the international break.

But it remains to be seen if fans will get their wish for Terry - who is free to talk to foreign clubs about a move in January - to come back to lead them.
