Wayne Rooney delivers his verdict on £36m Manchester United striker Anthony Martial

WAYNE ROONEY has backed 'magic' Anthony Martial to conjure up plenty more tricks for Manchester United.

Martial, 19, has scored four times in five appearances for United since joining on transfer deadline day for an initial £36m fee.

He failed to get on the scoresheet in the 3-0 win over Sunderland but set up Rooney's first Premier League goal of the season.

The striker's spellbinding start has proved the critics wrong but Rooney wants fans to remember the teenager is still learning his craft.

"He’s been incredible," the United skipper said. "He’s a young lad, we have to remember that.

"I think he’ll be a big player for us this season and in the future but we need to let him enjoy his football and I’m sure he’ll have magic moments for us."

The three points sent United top of the table following Manchester City's 4-1 defeat at Tottenham - and Rooney warned his team-mates to avoid resting on their laurels.

He said: "That’s what we’re all playing for, being number one at the end of the season, and it’s nice to be there now.

"But there’s a long way to go, it’s still early days and we have to keep working hard to make sure we can stay there or finish there at the end of the season."
