Carlisle 0 - 1 Newport County: Tyler Blackwood's second-half strike earns Newport a maiden victory

On-loan striker Tyler Blackwood came off the bench to score the goal that gave Newport a 1-0 win over Carlisle, their first victory of the season.

The QPR forward, signed on a month's loan, was on target with a 68th-minute header after a Carlisle side showing seven changes had failed to match their midweek heroics at Liverpool.

There was an early blow for the Cumbrians when they lost leading scorer Jabo Ibehre with a hamstring injury in the 17th minute. The 10-goal striker pulled up sharply and was immediately replaced by Derek Asamoah.

County had their own injury problem just before the break when Danny Holmes was knocked cold in a collision with Patrick Brough and, after lengthy attention, he had to be substituted for Scott Boden, who almost scored straight away with a shot which flew dangerously across the face of goal.

Mark Gillespie prevented Lennel John-Lewis giving County a 53rd-minute lead after the striker was sent clear by Boden only to see the goalkeeper smother his angled shot.

Newport's first away goal of the season came in the 68th minute when Blackwood sneaked in at the near post to get his head on the end of Nana Twumasi's cross from the right.

Asamoah and Kevin Osei missed late chances as Carlisle woke up too late to retrieve the damage.
