Rayo Vallecano 2 - 1 Sporting de Gijon: Rayo Vallecano take advantage of Bernardo dismissal to pick up second win

Rayo Vallecano picked up their second win of the campaign as a 2-1 success at home to 10-man Sporting Gijon also made it back-to-back victories for coach Paco Jemez.

Vallecano made the most of their man advantage after Gijon skipper Bernardo was shown two quick-fire yellow cards in the first half, and they were 2-0 up thanks to Roberto Trashorras and Javi Guerra.

Jony halved the deficit for Gijon but despite their efforts, the home side held on.

Chances were at a premium in the opening stages at the Estadio Vallecas, as only Jony managed a meaningful attempt when his shot from range flew wide.

Things picked up shortly after Vallecano midfielder Pablo Hernandez was forced off with an injury. Hernandez was seen clutching his thigh and was replaced by Adrian Embarba in the 25th minute.

The game-changing moment came shortly before half-time as Bernardo was shown two yellows in the space of a few minutes, the second when a shot from a Vallecano player in the box struck his arm.

Vallecano captain Trashorras slotted the resulting penalty into the bottom corner and Guerra made it 2-0 shortly after the restart when he was first to the rebound following a good save by Gijon goalkeeper Alberto Garcia.

However, the two-goal lead lasted barely a few minutes as Jony raced half way across the pitch from the left flank to finish low.

Gijon had a strong shout for handball midway through the second half which was turned down, and as the game came to a close, Vallecano had a late chance to increase their lead when Embarba's shot was superbly saved by Garcia.
