Keylor Navas: "I cried when I found out I was staying"

Keylor Navas revealed to COPE just what he went through on deadline day.

"I don't get angry easily, but we all have our moments", stated the Real Madrid shotstopper. One such moment took place on 31st August which was a rollercoaster day for him and his family.

"I never wanted to leave Real Madrid. My agent told me to be alert to my phone. We had to go to Barajas, although I never actually got on a plane, I was in a waiting room", he explained. "I thought that if God wanted me to leave Madrid, it would be for the best, but he didn't want me to and I'm still here".

It was one of the toughest days of his career. "I cried that night when I found out I was staying, it was a build-up of emotions. I didn't want to leave, Madrid is my home". When asked about a possible wage increase, the 28-year-old did not beat around the bush: "I haven't asked for a raise".

The Costa Rican has turned over a new leaf and is solely focused on Real Madrid, despite signing a contract to cut his ties with 'Los Blancos'. That is all water under the bridge now: "I signed the Manchester United contract on a stretcher at Valdebebas while I had my medical, but I want to write my own story at this club and win everything this season. We have things to improve, but we're on the right path".

The former Levante man is confident that trophies will be on the way, not least thanks to a certain Portuguese forward: "Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player in the world. With him around, accomplishing our targets becomes much easier".

On Wednesday, like before every game, Navas will kneel down on the goalline prior to kick-off. "I pray for God to help me and to stop anything bad happening to me or my teammates". With the Costa Rica international in goal, divine intervention is not necessary for 'Los Blancos' to be in safe hands.
