DAVID DE GEA has been given 48 hours to win back his place in the Manchester United side.

The 24-year-old keeper was left shocked and stunned by the shambolic collapse of his £29m move to Real Madrid.

The deal fell through when the proper paperwork wasn't lodged with La Liga and FIFA officials before the deadline.

De Gea was left fuming after setting his heart on joining the Spanish giants and will now return to United to see out the remaining 10 months of his contract.

The former Atletico Madrid star has been on international duty with Spain and made his first competitive appearance of the season against Macedonia on Tuesday.

He will resume training with Louis van Gaal's men this morning and is desperate to win back his place from Argentine Sergio Romero in the starting XI ahead of Saturday's crunch visit of Liverpool.

His relationship with Van Gaal broke down during the transfer saga and he will hold talks with the Dutchman.

Van Gaal wants the keeper to regain his best form and cement his place in the team as United look to challenge for the title.

Starsport understands Van Gaal is willing to offer De Gea an olive branch and pick him to face the Reds, provided he can prove he is mentally and physically right in training ahead of the game.

A club source said: "Things have been difficult, but he's coming back now and pride and ego need to be put aside for the good of the team.

"If David can show the manager he is in the right frame of mind to face Liverpool and looks sharp in training then he will be picked."

De Gea admits it was good to pull on the gloves for the first time this season and is determined to fight for his place at United.

He said: "I felt good. I really wanted to play. Now I need to keep working and see if I have some good fortune at my club as well.

"My future will be the same as now. Remain calm, keep working and improving. In concrete terms, enjoy my football. I am happy."
