Sampdoria romped to a 5-2 win over Serie A newcomers Carpi in their season opener in Carpi on Sunday evening.

Five of the six goals of the game were scored in a thrilling first half at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

Eder struck from the penalty spot in the 14th minute after Gaetano Letizia brought down Luis Muriel in the area to put the hosts on the way to victory in Walter Zenga's first league game in charge of Samp.

Luis Muriel doubled the hosts' lead seven minutes later when he beat Carpi goalkeeper Zeljko Brkic with a right-footed shot.

Muriel struck his second in the 21st minute before Eder made it 4-0 two minutes later.

Samp then extended their lead with Fernando's free-kick after 37 minutes played.

Carpi pulled one back one minute later through Andrea Lazzari's 12-yard shot that beat goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano.

Samp had midfielder Ivan Davidov sent off in the 81st minute for a second yellow card and struck a second seven minutes later thanks to a left-footed volley from Ryder Matos.

The visitors should have scored again before the final whistle but Lazzari saw his penalty saved by Viviano as Carpi endured a difficult start to life in the top flight.
