The Netherlands international received his marching orders after just 24 minutes at the Liberty Stadium following two bookable offences, both of them fouls on Swans forward Jefferson Montero.

The Magpies were trailing 1-0 at the time of his sending-off, courtesy of a ninth-minute opener from Bafetimbi Gomis, and Janmaat concedes he left his team-mates with an uphill battle.

Andre Ayew killed off any hope the visitors had of getting back into the contest with a second goal for Garry Monk's side on 52 minutes, which leaves new Toon boss Steve McClaren still searching for his first win after two games.

Janmaat, who has since incurred a one-match ban, told the club's official website: "I'm very disappointed. It was stupid of me and I have to apologise to my team-mates, the supporters and everybody, because trying to win a game with ten men is very difficult.

"The first yellow card was clear. The second one, I lost the ball, he (Montero) ran past me and in a split-second I touched him. I pulled him back and that was stupid.

"With 11 men at Swansea it is already hard but with 10 men it makes it almost impossible. We didn't give up though, and the rest of the team gave it everything, but it was a disappointing game."
