Barnsley 1 - 0 Burton Albion FC : Reds ride luck to take points

Barnsley celebrated their first home game of the season with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Burton.

Substitute Conor Hourihane struck low and hard just after the hour-mark to score from the penalty spot and gift his team all three points.

Barnsley threatened early on with Marc Roberts failing to beat Burton goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin.

The visitors had their chances too, with Abdenasser El Khayati twice going close with a pair of low-driven efforts from the edge of the box.

Barnsley head coach Lee Johnson employed a 4-5-2 formation for the second half, with both Dan Crowley, on loan from Arsenal, and Hourihane coming off the bench.

The deadlock was broken in the 67th minute. Barnsley midfielder Josh Scowen was brought down in the box by Damien McCrory, and Hourihane converted from the spot, firing into the bottom corner.

Burton could have leveled just minutes later, but Mark Duffy sent his shot high and wide from inside the box.

Visiting substitute Timmy Thiele's 30-yard thunderbolt rattled the crossbar late on as Barnsley held on to secure the win.
