Manchester United were one of many clubs who tried to sign Reece Oxford from West Ham last year but he decided to stay with the Hammers, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Oxford became the second youngest player to ever start a Premier League game on Sunday when he was selected in Slaven Bilic’s first starting XI in the league for the trip away to Arsenal.
Despite playing at the Emirates against World Cup winner Mesut Ozil, Oxford did not look fazed and he put in an extremely mature performance.
Reece Oxford won 3/6 tackles against Arsenal on his debut.
Now the report from the MEN says that United tried to sign Oxford last season, along with Arsenal and Liverpool, due to the immense promise he was showing.
However, he chose to stay at West Ham, with the club offering him and his family accommodation in order to help persuade him to stay.
Oxford has clearly been vindicated in his decision given that he started against Arsenal and the way Bilic spoke about him after the game suggests that he will get more starts in the future.
The important thing for Oxford now is that he gets more time in the first team and it seems that West Ham are going to manage his development very carefully.
