Stevenage Borough 0 - 2 Notts County : Sheringham starts with a loss

Curtis Thompson's wonderful goal set Notts County on their way to a 2-0 win at Stevenage as former England striker Teddy Sheringham began his managerial career with defeat.

Thompson struck in the 35th minute following a terrific counter attack by Ricardo Moniz's side, which included eight new signings in the XI, before Mawouna Amevor wrapped up the points late on.

The opening goal came just after Brett Williams had wasted a glorious chance for Sheringham's troops by shooting straight at Roy Carroll and it epitomised the football Moniz wants his Magpies side to play this season.

Liam Noble slipped a pinpoint pass to Jon Stead out wide and his low cross was rammed in by Thompson at the back post.

The Magpies looked the most likely to add to the scoring as Chris Day repelled Kyle De Silva's stinging volley and Amevor eventually completed the scoring two minutes from time as he tapped in after Day had kept out Stead's effort.

Both sides were then reduced to 10 men in the 90th minute when Amevor and Tom Hitchcock were dismissed following a tussle on the halfway line.
