The only penalty kick missed in the shoot-out was Thomas Muller's and Guangzhou scored with all of their penalties to run out the winners.

Bayern came into the last game of their Asian tour after wins over Valencia and Inter Milan, but they were not able to get past the Guangzhou defence, including missing a number of decent scoring opportunities.

Guangzhou had new signing Robinho in action, after arriving on Tuesday, for the first time much to the delight of the home fans.

In the 5th minute Bayern's Pierre Hojbjerg should have scored from close but he put Mario Gotze's cross narrowly wide of goal.

Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was kept busy early making a number of saves including one to deny Robinho scoring on debut.

In the 26th minute Robert Lewandowski had an opportunity to score but lost his footing in front of goal.

Just before the break David Alaba blocked a shot at goal by Ricardo Goulart to ensure the sides went into the break goalless.

Douglas Costa and Thiago Alcantara were brought on to replace Hojbjerg and Sebastian Rode respectively and it almost paid off immediately when Costa passed a dangerous ball to Lewandowski but Feng was able to clear.

Costa nearly scored in the 60th minute when he pushed the ball through Zeng Cheng's legs only for the keeper to react swiftly and make a great save to keep his side in the game.

Guangzhou forward Gao Lin should have done better when he had a one-on-one with replacement keeper Ivan Lucic but failed to score.

For Bayern, Lewandowski and Costa both came close to scoring late in the game but just could not make their chances count.

In the end the game ended goalless with the home side going on to win 5-4 in the penalty-shootout thanks to Muller's missed opening penalty kick.
