Liverpool are eying up a surprise move for Real Madrid right-back Alvaro Arbeloa, with the Spaniard prepared to spurn offers from Napoli and the MLS to head back to Merseyside, as per the Liverpool Echo.
The Reds have strengthened their ranks well this summer and have already brought in six players, with two of those defenders.
Nathaniel Clyne was brought in to fill the void left behind by Glen Johnson, whilst young Joseph Gomez has come in and impressed at left-back – the 18-year-old is naturally a centre-back – in pre-season for Brendan Rodgers’ side.
However, the Echo reports that Real Madrid are prepared to offload 32-year-old Arbeloa after bringing in Danilo this summer from Porto, and Liverpool are holding an interest.
The Echo does report that Liverpool want it to be on a free transfer, but Los Blancos are keen to acquire £4 million for the Spain international.
Arbeloa spent two years at Anfield from 2007 till 2009, after Rafa Benitez snapped up the solid full-back from La Liga side Deportivo La Coruna.
Arbeloa grew into a fan favourite during his time under Benitez, with the right-back part of the club’s famous ‘Spanish Armada’, which consisted of the likes of Xabi Alonso, Luis Garcia and co.
