United are currently third in the table following a 1-0 victory over Club America, with Morgan Schneiderlin scoring the only goal of the game with one of his first touches for the club.
The Frenchman was one of four new arrivals to feature in Seattle, with Memphis Depay, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Matteo Damian all given 45 minutes.
Those four are likely to play some part against San Jose at the Avaya Stadium, with United expected to secure their second successive win of their US tour.
After being deployed in a variety of positions last season, Van Gaal hinted that Wayne Rooney, who the Dutchman believes is a "fantastic captain", will be deployed in the main striker's role, where he is set to be a regular feature this coming campaign.
United face a further game against Barcelona on Saturday before wrapping up their tour against Paris Saint-Germain in Chicago.
Marouane Fellaini looks set to feature for the first time this pre-season after being rested for United's tour opener.
Antonio Valencia and David de Gea will face late tests after also missing the opener in Seattle with slight knocks, while Javier Hernandez will again miss out with a collarbone injury.
