Man City raise bid for wantaway Liverpool star Raheem Sterling to £44m
Manchester City will increase their bid for Raheem Sterling

MANCHESTER CITY will intensify their pursuit of Raheem Sterling by submitting a new £40m offer for the Liverpool attacker.

The bid is likely to rise to around £44m depending on Sterling’s progress, but remains below Liverpool’s £50m valuation of the England international.

City made contact with Liverpool yesterday and the Anfield club is now expecting a bid.

It comes with Sterling, 20, still insistent he will not go on the club’s tour of the Far East and Australia which departs tomorrow (Sunday).

City have previously had two offers - £25m and £35m - rejected by Liverpool for Sterling and their third bid is a further indication of how determined they are to land the youngster.

Sterling reported for training yesterday and took part in a double session having called in sick two days running.

The bid from City comes with the Professional Footballers’ Association offering to mediate in Sterling’s acrimonious standoff with Liverpool.

The serious deterioration in relations between the player and the club has been monitored by PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor, whose organisation is prepared to speak to all parties in an attempt to try and ease tensions while Sterling remains a Liverpool player.

Former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister is set to join Brendan Rodgers’ coaching staff as first team coach, and defender Martin Skrtel has agreed a new contract at the club.
