Ten big names who got relegated from the Premier League, including players who enjoyed success at Chelsea and Manchester United.
1) Michael Carrick
A player to experience both ends of the spectrum – relegation with one club and title glory with another, Manchester United star Michael Carrick was part of the West Ham team that went down in 2003.
2) Joe Cole
Quickly snapped up by Chelsea after that same West Ham team suffered the drop in 2003, Joe Cole became another hugely successful Hammers cast-off by moving to a bigger club.
3) Jermain Defoe
One of Tottenham’s best strikers of the modern era, Jermain Defoe went on to have a great career in the Premier League despite also suffering relegation with West Ham in 2003.
4) David James
Yet another big name in that talented Hammers side that so badly underachieved, David James couldn’t keep the club up in 2003 and later joined Manchester City.
5) Andrew Johnson
Despite finishing as second highest scorer in the Premier League in 2004/05, Andrew Johnson’s goals couldn’t keep Crystal Palace from relegation that year, though his fine form later saw him join Everton.
6) James McCarthy
A superb midfielder who has only improved since joining Everton, James McCarthy’s fine form couldn’t keep Wigan up in 2013, though he famously formed part of that side that also won the FA Cup.
7) Scott Parker
Having played for big names like Chelsea and Tottenham, not to mention captaining England, Scott Parker is another big name to have been relegated from the top flight, going down with West Ham in 2011.
8) Damien Duff
A title winner with Chelsea and often regarded as one of the league’s best wingers, Damien Duff has been relegated twice in his career, first with Newcastle United and later with Fulham.
9) Demba Ba
A lethal goal poacher who really shone with Newcastle and to a lesser extent with Chelsea, Demba Ba started out at West Ham in the Premier League, suffering relegation in 2011.
10) Loic Remy
Relegated with Queens Park Rangers in 2013, Loic Remy was quickly back in the Premier League with Newcastle and is now at Chelsea, helping the club to the title this season.
