Aston Villa have offered a new contract to skipper Ron Vlaar, but have released veteran striker Darren Bent.

Vlaar offer, Bent released

Vlaar's contract is up at the end of this month, and he could leave on a free transfer.

He has been linked with a host of clubs at home and abroad, including Manchester United. But Villa boss Tim Sherwood is hoping to keep the Dutch centre-back at the club.

Bent, 31, joined Villa from Sunderland in January 2011 in a club-record £24m deal, and scored on his debut against Manchester City.

He was the club's top scorer in the Premier League in his first two seasons.

But he fell out of favour under Paul Lambert, dropping down the pecking order behind the likes of Christian Benteke, Gabby Agbonlahor and Andreas Weimann.

Bent, who scored a total of 25 goals in 72 appearances for Villa, also spent time out on loan at Brighton and Derby County.

Irish defender Enda Stevens, 24, signed by Alex McLeish, has also been released.
