TOM CLEVERLEY was last night called into the England squad after an injury in training left Tottenham's Ryan Mason facing a scan on his knee.

Mason suffered the setback following an innocuous tackle with Arsenal's Jack Wilshere during a session at St George's Park yesterday.

Cleverley's call-up completed a hectic day for the midfielder, who had spent most of it at Everton where he was undergoing a medical towards finalising a free transfer move from Manchester United.

He is set to officially join on July 1 after agreeing a five-year deal and team up again with Roberto Martinez, whom he played for while on loan at Wigan in 2010-11.

Cleverley, 25, spent this season on loan at Aston Villa but has opted to move to Goodison Park and will hope his return to the England fold becomes a regular occurrence.

"It says a lot, when someone like Tom is available on a free transfer and he can pick his next club out of many options home and abroad, that he has chosen to play for our football club," said Martinez.

England coach Roy Hodgson made Cleverley a fixture of his early reign, but the last of his 13 caps came in the defeat to Germany in November 2013.

He will part of the squad that heads to Dublin today with Hodgson likely to field a strong team against the Republic of Ireland tomorrow. Goalkeeper Joe Hart looks set to start, while England could select a midfield trio of Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Wilshere with Raheem Sterling, Wayne Rooney and Adam Lallana ahead of them.

Rooney is two goals shy of equalling Sir Bobby Charlton's record of 49 goals for England and the captain will hope to overhaul with a Euro 2016 qualifier with Slovenia looming a week tomorrow.
