Dietmar Hamann believes Manchester United can land Gareth Bale by offering Angel Di Maria as part of a swap deal
Former Liverpool favourite Dietmar Hamann has suggested a possible swap deal between Manchester United and Real Madrid involving Angel Di Maria and Gareth Bale in the summer.
Both the players have had difficult seasons and have found it tough to replicate the form they showed during the previous campaign and this has prompted the German midfielder to suggest a prospective swap deal between the two giants of European football.
Di Maria moved to Old Trafford from the Spanish capital club last summer for a British-record £59.7m, and after a blistering start to his career in England, he has found it hard to adapt to the pace and the intensity of the English game and has found himself spending a considerable time out of the first-team picture in recent weeks.
Bale, on the other hand, is also struggling in second season at Real, and has failed to live up to expectations after a great first season with the club. The Welsh international was a key player as the Santiago Bernabeu outfit won the European Cup for the 10th time and also played a key role during the entire campaign.
However, he has struggled to replicate that this season, and has come under some heavy criticism in recent months from the club's fans and TV pundits alike. And he has been heavily linked with a move back to the Premier League with Old Trafford being touted as his potential destination.
The former Bayern Munich midfielder, believes that Real cannot have Cristiano Ronaldo and Bale in the same team and Hamann is confident that the Portuguese star is still the club's top player meaning that Bale faces an uncertain future at the club as things stand.
"I wouldn't be too concerned with Gareth Bale's performance against Juventus. I know he had a poor game but he had been out for a few weeks," Hamann told talkSPORT.
"Sometimes these players, who rely on their pace, can take a few weeks to get back to full speed."
"A bigger issue is the problem with Cristiano Ronaldo. I don't think there's space for the two of them. Ronaldo has scored 54 goals this season, he is their main player. I just don't think there's a place for both of them," the former Reds midfielder explained.
"Last year they seemed to get on well, Bale had a decent season and scored more than 20 goals. The fans gave him some stick before Christmas though, and his confidence seems to have gone. I don't know whether he's homesick or there is something wrong."
"There is a lot of uncertainty at the moment. The way it's going, I would be very surprised if he was at Real Madrid next season. Manchester United will be on red alert," the former German international warned.
"Angel di Maria came from Real Madrid and there may be the opportunity to do a swap deal. I would love to see Gareth Bale back in the Premier League," Hamann added.
