Former Liverpool and Real Madrid winger Steve McManaman has picked his team of the season for BT Sport, and surprisingly left out both Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa whilst including Martin Skrtel.

With the PFA Team of the Year announced on Sunday, pundits and fans have been responding with their own selections, and McManaman is the latest.
The former Liverpool man chose Skrtel ahead of Jose Fonte and Gary Cahill at centre-back to play alongside Chelsea skipper John Terry, whilst Costa and Fabregas were excluded.
Costa has scored 19 goals in his first Premier League season, but has struggled with injuries, getting outscored by both Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane in the process, with the latter making McManaman’s team.
Fabregas leads the Premier League assists chart with 16, but his form has dropped a bit in 2015, leading McManaman to select Philippe Coutinho and David Silva ahead of him.
Interestingly the former Liverpool man also went for Leighton Baines ahead of both Ryan Bertrand and Cesar Azpilicueta.
It’s unlikely that too many fans will agree with McManaman and his team selection, but that is part of the joy of these awards; they’re hardly ever agreed on.
McManaman did pick both Eden Hazard and Kane though, the PFA Player and Young Player of the Year.
