Ex-Liverpool star: Rafael Benitez could manage Reds again

Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore believes the club’s former manager Rafael Benitez would gladly return to the helm if current incumbent Brendan Rodgers is sacked.

The pressure on the Northern Irishman increased tonight following the 1-0 defeat at Hull City, making it only one win in five Premier League outings and denting the Reds’ fading hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

They remain in fifth position in the table but are seven points behind bitter rivals Manchester United in fourth, with only four fixtures remaining.

Collymore took to social media site Twitter after the game at the KC Stadium to offer his verdict, and revealed his belief that Benitez, who managed the Merseyside outfit between 2004 and 2010, would relish a comeback. He also cautioned that big-money signings are required:

I’d expect Rafa to be eager to go to #LFC. Unless a mega mega spend of #MUFC proportions, 5 still doesn’t go into a mega 4!   — Stan Collymore (@StanCollymore)

Benitez himself is currently trying to guide current club Napoli to qualification for Europe’s biggest club competition, either via a top-four finish in Serie A or by winning the Europa League.

He has another year remaining on his contract in Naples but still owns property on Merseyside and is likely to be interested in taking the job, should Rodgers depart Anfield at the end of the season.
