Wolfsburg returned to within 10 points of Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich with a 2-0 win in Hamburg which leaves their northern Germany rivals in serious danger of being relegated from the top flight of German football for the first time ever.

Josuha Guilavogui and Daniel Caligiuri netted the goals for Wolfsburg as they ensured that all top four clubs in Germany won this weekend.

As a result, their place in the Champions League next season was secured with 19 points separating them from fifth-placed Schalke with only six games of the season remaining.

Hamburg, who ended the game with 10 men after Johan Djourou was shown a late red card, will go into the final six games of the season with four points to make up on Hannover above the drop zone, while they could fall to the foot of the table on Sunday should Stuttgart beat Werder Bremen.

The positive signs in Hamburg's early play went to waste in the 10th minute when Cleber lost the ball cheaply to Kevin De Bruyne, who found Bas Dost with his pass and the ball then found its way through to Guilavogui, who sent his finish through the legs of Rene Adler.

Hamburg had never managed to come from behind to win in the Bundesliga this season, while with only 16 goals scored from their 27 games to date, the size of their task was already enormous.

The home fans did all they could to lift their team's spirits, but Wolfsburg were clearly the team in charge, even if they did not actively look to turn the screw.

Chances nevertheless arrived for the Wolves with Dost striking the crossbar, albeit from an offside position, and Caligiuri seeing his shot blocked.

Without too much effort, Wolfsburg still managed to double their lead in the 73rd minute when Caligiuri exchanged passes with Dost before beating Adler.

There was clearly no way back for Hamburg, while a second yellow card to Djourou late on made their task of recovering in the final six games of the season even greater, and the fans' whistles at the final whistle said the rest.
