Richard Wood had a stoppage-time header cleared of the line as Crawley had to settle for a goalless draw in their relegation six-pointer at Crewe.
In the first half veteran keeper Brian Jensen parried a strike from Crewe's Jamie Ness while Crawley's leading scorer Izale McLeod blazed well over.
After the restart, Lanre Oyebanjo latched onto a loose ball on the edge of the Crewe box and drove just past the top corner.
Ryan Colclough's introduction offered the Railwaymen a different dimension and the youngster went close when driving across the face of goal.
Ness then dropped a first-time effort onto the roof of the net as Crewe enjoyed a good spell of pressure.
Gavin Tomlin drove past the post for the visitors and McLeod stepped inside Alan Tate to set up a shot in the closing minutes, but lifted the ball into the arms of Paul Rachubka.
McLeod then tested Rachubka again with a fierce shot and Tomlin forced the Crewe keeper to turn his effort around the post.
And the frantic finish saw Crawley go even closer to snatching a win when Wood's header from the resulting corner was blocked.
