John Terry confirms agreement over new Chelsea deal

Chelsea captain John Terry has confirmed to the Evening Standard that he will sign a new contract with the club at the end of the season with his current one-year deal expiring in the summer.

Terry, 34, has been superb for the Premier League leaders this season and is fully expected to lift his fourth league title in May with Jose Mourinho guiding the Blues to the summit.

Diego Costa's 18 goals as well both Eden Hazard's and Cesc Fabregas' ability to create chances have been the main reasons as to why Chelsea find themselves top of the league, but Terry's world-class performances in defence are a huge factor, too.

The ageing defender was out of contract last summer and some concerns emerged over whether he would get a new deal but Mourinho has remained loyal to his captain and is to hand him another year (via BBC), for which he has not disappointed.

Terry has won possession through 66% of his attempted tackles (33/50) and 70% of his headed duels (73/105) in a dominant season in defence.

The 34-year-old has now also quashed any potential rumours over an exit from Stamford Bridge by claiming that a new deal will be signed.

Terry was quoted in the Standard as saying: "There has been a load of talk about me and the club speaking. It will happen, we both know it will happen. We are relaxed about it. I trust the club, they trust me. I'm sure things will happen soon. With the one-year roll-ons (club policy for players over 30), it's a point to prove, it's fighting for that next year."

His partnership with Gary Cahill is still strong and Terry is now also being used to develop 20-year-old Kurt Zouma, who has not put a foot wrong in the past couple of months.

John Terry has the best passing accuracy (90%) at Chelsea for players to have started more than five games.
