Jacob Murphy scored one goal and made another to help Colchester beat fellow strugglers Yeovil 2-0 and boost their survival hopes.

The Norwich loanee won a penalty for David Fox to score early in the second half and then netted himself four minutes later to secure victory for the U's.

Yeovil came close to scoring after 20 minutes when U's goalkeeper Sam Walker made an excellent save to push away Gozie Ugwu's long-range effort and then denied James Hayter from the rebound.

Colchester midfielder Alex Gilbey went close with a low 30-yard effort that deflected just wide for a corner while Murphy's shot flashed just wide of a post.

Colchester made the crucial breakthrough nine minutes after half-time when Fox scored from the spot, after Murphy had been fouled in the area by Nathan Smith.

Yeovil almost equalised seconds later, when Ugwu's low effort flashed inches wide.

But four minutes later Murphy raced onto George Moncur's pass and slotted past Scott Loach, to seal Colchester's important win.
